How To Avoid Frozen Pipes

Although we can't wait for spring to come, we  have to always remember  that  we are still in the cold season.  Winter is here and there are some important things in our homes that we need to take extra care of. Such things are mostly forgotten by many but once they get damaged, we now realized what great mistakes we have made. One of them is our pipes. We must not forget to keep them from being frozen. You can get more information from your local Rotorooter. I cannot forget the ugly incident that happened to a friend.  We were out with the kids last winter  when she got a phone call from her sister. Their apartment was flooded with water due to burst water pipe. At first, we were all confused but she managed to call a plumber before heading to the scene. Off-course everything was put under control but with lots of damages and it blew their finances.
According to State Farm Insurance Statistics, approximately 250,000 families suffer damaged homes every winter because of  frozen  water pipes that bursts.  A 3mm crack could emit about 250 gallons of water daily.

Here Are Some Tips on How To Prevent Your Pipes From Freezing

1. Fix as soon as possible any leaky taps and replace washers. If you notice any leakage around the valves try to tighten  it or call an expert in  plumbing repair to inspect and repair it.

2. During the cold winter season, turning on the hot water to a trickle and letting it run continuously from a faucet nearest an outside wall can help prevent frozen pipes.

3. If you notice any draught in your house, try to seal them before temperature outside drops because cold air can freeze both cold and hot pipes.

4. Make sure that your loft and walls are insulated.

5. Leaving the heating on low in cold weather helps to heat pipes and this is most advisable if you are leaving your home for a period of time.

6. It is good to show the family members where the water main shut off valve is and how to shut it off (by turning it clockwise).

What To Do If Your Pipes Freeze or Burst

1. The very first thing to do is to turn off the water at the mains.

2. A frozen or burst pipe presents an immediate problem but looking for specialists in diagnosing and fixing the problem is your best option.

3. If the water has burst and you are wet, stay out of electrics around the pipe. If it has not burst, try to protect any electric around the pipe.
